How to write a resume with AI using experience you can prove

Use ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude to improve resume bullets, compare a job description and check your draft without making up skills or achievements.

Resume draft, pencil, and neatly arranged work sample cards in navy and yellow.

The strongest input for a resume assistant is a factual record of what you have done. Start with that record, then use the chat to make the wording clearer and decide what is relevant to a particular job. These examples work with pasted text, so you can practise without uploading a full document or buying a resume service.

The quick answer

Build a factual experience list, compare it with the job description, and ask for revisions to one resume section at a time. Require every new claim to trace back to your notes. Check the final text yourself, keep only skills you can explain, and export in the format the employer requests.

Go straight to the steps

Before you begin

Remove your address, phone number and other unnecessary personal information from the version you paste. Replace confidential employer or customer details with neutral labels. Keep the unedited original. This process improves a draft; it cannot guarantee an interview, an applicant tracking system score or a job offer.

What you’ll need

  • Your current resume or a list of jobs, projects and education
  • The actual job description
  • Verified dates, responsibilities and any documented results
  • A document editor
  • A saved copy of your original resume

Let’s do this

Step by step

  1. 01

    Create a small evidence bank

List each role, its dates, your responsibilities, tools you actually used and outcomes you can support. Add school, volunteer or personal projects where relevant, clearly labeled as such. Mark unknown numbers as unknown. This is your reference sheet: a persuasive rewrite should not turn an uncertain memory into a precise achievement.

  2. 02

    Break the vacancy into requirements

Paste the job description separately from your experience notes. Ask for a table that distinguishes explicit requirements from preferences and unclear wording. For each requirement, identify the evidence you already have. Leave a genuine gap visible; a job asking for team management does not make participation in a team equivalent to managing it.

  3. 03

Revise one bullet at a time

Choose a vague line and provide its actual supporting facts. Ask for two concise alternatives, then compare every verb and number with the original record. ‘Maintained’ and ‘led’ describe different levels of responsibility. Pick the wording you could explain comfortably if an interviewer asked exactly what you did.

  4. 04

Arrange the draft for this application

Bring the most relevant, truthful evidence forward within an appropriate resume structure. Keep dates and headings consistent. Use the employer's terminology where it accurately describes your skills, but avoid inserting a string of keywords into unrelated experience. Ask the assistant to explain an ordering change before accepting it.

  5. 05

Audit the revision against the original

Compare the two versions side by side. Highlight added skills, quantities, seniority claims, credentials and changed dates. Require a source in your evidence bank for each one. Delete invented outcomes rather than merely making them sound less dramatic. Then read the draft aloud and replace wording that you would never naturally use.

  6. 06

    Check the exported document

Follow the vacancy's file-format instructions and open the saved file yourself. Inspect page breaks, contact details, headings and any clipped lines. Copy its text into a blank document to spot an obvious reading-order problem, while recognizing that this is not a simulation of every hiring system. Save a copy labeled for that specific application.

Put it into practice

Prompts you can copy and try

Replace bracketed placeholders with your own details. The examples are starting points; check the replies against your actual task.

Compare the job with your real experience

Keep the job description and evidence list under separate headings.

Help me assess this job description against my experience before editing my resume. Create a table with Requirement, Exact evidence from my notes, and Gap or clarification needed. Distinguish required qualifications from preferences where the job posting does so. Do not infer that I have a skill merely because someone in my role usually would. Do not score my chance of being hired.

MY VERIFIED EXPERIENCE:

Then try this follow-up

Which three pieces of my existing evidence are most relevant? Explain the connection without adding experience or changing my job titles.

Rewrite a bullet without inventing results

The fictional facts below show how much detail to provide. Replace them with your own.

Suggest two resume bullets using only these facts: I updated a shared delivery log each weekday, checked entries against dispatch emails, and flagged missing information to my supervisor. I did not manage staff, and I have no measured time savings.

Keep each option under 30 words. Use a clear action verb and describe the work accurately. Do not invent percentages, revenue, leadership responsibility or a business outcome. After the options, list one factual question that could help me improve the bullet further.

Then try this follow-up

I can confirm the log covered three delivery routes. Incorporate that scope, but still do not claim a measured improvement.

Make a first resume from projects

Useful when you have little paid experience; keep project types and dates explicit.

Help me organize an entry-level resume for [role]. Use only the education, projects, volunteering and paid work below. Suggest section headings and two bullet ideas for each relevant experience. Label school projects as school projects and volunteering as volunteering. Do not turn either into employment or add qualifications. Mark any missing dates as [confirm date].

MY FACTS:
[paste your factual notes]

Then try this follow-up

The project was completed by a team of four. Revise the bullets to distinguish my contribution from the team's overall result.

Find unsupported claims in the edited resume

Paste the earlier draft or evidence bank alongside the revision.

Audit this resume revision against my verified notes. Return a table with Revised claim, Supporting fact, and Keep / Check / Remove. Pay particular attention to numbers, dates, tools, certifications, leadership verbs and claims of improvement. An absence of evidence is a reason to ask me, not a reason to fill in a plausible detail. Do not rewrite the whole resume yet.

REVISION:

Then try this follow-up

Remove the unsupported claims you identified. Preserve the remaining dates and facts exactly, then list the changes you made.

A worked bullet, with no imaginary achievement

Using the fictional delivery-log facts above, a supportable revision is: ‘Updated a daily delivery log, checked entries against dispatch emails, and flagged missing information to a supervisor.’ The improvement is clearer detail. There is no basis in those notes for ‘cut delivery delays by 40%’ or ‘led dispatch operations’.

If you later confirm the three-route scope, you can add ‘for three delivery routes’. That is different from guessing a performance result. Keep a private note of where a number came from so you can revisit it when preparing for an interview. A useful resume can contain precise responsibilities even when you do not have formal impact measurements.

Keywords, formatting and your own voice

Harvard's career guidance recommends using generated suggestions as edits to your own material, with accurate wording and relevant job terminology. Keep a short list of terms you genuinely meet. If a posting says ‘inventory tracking’ and that describes your work, use it in context; repeating it throughout the document does not add evidence.

Read one section as if you were explaining it to a person. Replace inflated phrases with the task, scope and result you can actually describe. For formatting, begin with readable headings and a straightforward layout, then follow the employer's submission instructions. No prompt can ensure that every employer or hiring platform will interpret a document identically.

Keep the difference between fact and suggestion visible

Assistant suggestionQuestion to askAction
Added a percentage improvementWhere was this measured?Remove it unless you can verify it

A quick final check

  • Every date, qualification and number is verified.
  • School projects and volunteering are labeled accurately.
  • Each skill has a real example behind it.
  • The wording sounds natural when you read it aloud.
  • The final saved document opens correctly and follows the application instructions.

Common questions & sticking points

What should I put in a ChatGPT prompt for my resume?

Include the target role, the job description and a factual account of your experience. Ask for one specific task, such as revising two bullets or comparing requirements. Require unsupported claims to be marked for checking. Leave out personal contact information and confidential employer details that the task does not need.

Can AI help with a resume when I have no work experience?

It can help organize real school projects, volunteering, coursework and other relevant activities. Explain what you personally contributed and label each experience accurately. Do not let a draft convert an unpaid project into a job or claim a qualification you have not earned. Use missing-information markers until you can confirm details.

Will an AI resume automatically pass an ATS?

No. Applicant tracking systems and employer screening practices vary, and a generated score is not a guarantee of selection. Use accurate, relevant terminology and a readable document, then follow the application's instructions. Judge the draft by whether it communicates your actual qualifications clearly rather than by a promised pass rate.

How do I stop AI from making up resume achievements?

Supply a verified evidence list and explicitly prohibit invented metrics, titles, skills and outcomes. Then audit the revision against that list yourself. Prompt instructions can reduce unwanted additions but cannot guarantee their absence. If a number or claim has no source, remove it or confirm it before submitting.
