How do I scan a document on my iPhone?

Scan several pages into one document with iPhone Notes or Files. Get clean corners, readable text, and a saved copy you can actually find.

A document scan is more useful than a quick photograph when you need the whole page, straight edges, and several sheets in order. Your iPhone already has a scanner. Start with a simple one-page document before tackling a longer form, then check the saved result before sending it.

The quick answer

In Notes, open a note, tap the attachment button, and choose Scan Documents. Capture each page, adjust the corners, and finish the scan.

Go straight to the steps

Before you begin

Move unrelated paperwork out of the camera view. If the document contains account details or identification, check the recipient and sharing destination carefully.

What you’ll need

  • An iPhone with Notes or Files
  • The original paper document
  • A flat, well-lit surface

Let’s do this

Step by step

  1. 01

    Prepare one page

Flatten the sheet on a surface that contrasts with the paper. Keep your phone above it rather than at a steep angle. Move a lamp or yourself if a shadow falls across small print.

  2. 02

    Open the scanner

In Notes, create or open a note. Tap the attachment button and select Scan Documents. Older versions may show a camera icon instead. You can also start from Files using its More menu.

  3. 03

    Capture and check the edges

Let automatic capture work, or use the shutter button. Adjust the corner handles if they cut off text or include the table. Keep the scan only when all four corners are correct.

  4. 04

    Add the remaining pages

Capture pages in reading order. Finish using Done or the completion control shown by your version. Open the saved document and check every page, especially faint writing and page numbers.

  5. 05

    Save a clearly named copy

When scanning in Files, choose a folder and save. In Notes, open the scanned document and use sharing options to save or send a copy. Reopen the copy from its destination before relying on it.

Make a scan easy for someone else to use

A filename such as apartment-application-pages-1-to-3 is more useful than scan-final-new. For a multipage form, check that both sides of every sheet were included. A blank back page is different from a missing signature page.

Try this quick quality test: zoom in on the smallest line of text, then return to the full page. If either the letters or the page edges are unclear, rescan that page now. Darkening an unreadable image later is less reliable than getting a clean capture.

A quick final check

  • Every required page is included.
  • Small text and signatures are legible.
  • The saved file opens from the intended folder.

Common questions & sticking points

How can I scan several pages into one file?

Continue adding scans before finishing the document, rather than starting a separate scan for every sheet.

Do I need to pay for a scanner app?

No extra app is needed for the Notes and Files methods described here. Specialized editing or recognition features are a separate question.
